Brain Coral - Regeneration???

Several months back, I purchased 200+ pounds of live rock for my 125 gallon. It was gulf of mexico aquacultured and I found a piece of brain coral in the box, which also went into the tank. The brain coral is about 3" in diameter. During the curing cycle the outer edges died off and became hardened like a skeleton. The coral is now healthier than ever, but how will it grow? Will it absorb the calcified parts and continue to grow outwards radially?

Im not sure if it will grow over the calcified part or not. I think when parts of it die you need to cut it away for it to continue growing but I'm not sure.

pix when I get home of one that has been cut in half as an experimental frag to cut out dead skeleton, it has come back nicely and covered most of the cuts from the rock saw. I'll look when I get home
