Actualy, the best idea is to pic out a biotope and coral that lives in that biotope, then build everything else around it.
This would include the intensity of your lighting, your current and flow dynamics, substrate, water temps, filtrations, and tank coinhabitants (not just corals).
It is best to match the requirements of all your corals so that they can inhabit the sme tank without any specimens having to suffer or compromise. There will be several levels of light and current, based on how your tank is established, but this is the same as the organization of the reef based on proximity to the other corals, other specimens, current, shading, and presence or absence of competitors.
Select a biotope, and your most important specimen, then select your equipment and build the reef around those decisions.
