bleach in the tank!!!

just wondering how dangerous the use of bleach is with cleaning stuff for the tank. i use filter socks on my return line and i switch one out for another twice a week. by that time theyre nasty brown. i rinse them as good as possible then soak them in bleach till theyre nice and white again. then i rinse the bleach out as good as possible and put the filter back in. u can never get the smell of bleach out entirely and was wondering what could happen if bleach did enter the water column. ive been doing this for a few months without probs but i figure ill see if some of the trt chemists can tell me if its harmless, or toxic and why???

not good. Why does it matter how white the socks are if they are just used for filters?

I bleached my socks too. Never had problems. But if you can get rid of socks, do it.

I do it all the time, just make sure you don't use cented bleach and use Declorinator after you rince everything.

Back when I had a FO, I used to bleach all the aquarim ordimints regularly an a vat of 25% bleach or so, then rince really well, then de-clor the vat with the rince water, and add them back to the tank.

Bleach is clorine, bad for the fish, but simple de-clorinator takes it out really well.

Clorine is toxit! Even to people in the right ammount. Thats why people dont use city water (for their tanks some even themselfs). I would just bash em under water for a minute and then rinse with the nozzel presd on the oppisite side of the input.
DON"T use soad or any cleaning agents. After all they are just filters and no need to comtaminate the tank. With a little luck a small % of the bacteria will survive the wash and help clean the water.

just trying to get all the poo out of them, because i dont want to be leaching nutrients back into the water stream. if theyre white again i know theyre clean again!! i do rinse them very well before reinstalling, but the smell of bleach never goes away completely

Bleach will get rid of the slime that can clog the socks up.

It's won't hurt if you just rinse it fairly good.

Bleach is SODIUM hypo CHLORIDE. get it?
When the hypo is gone, you're left with salt water.

Yep, Carbon takes out Clorine, that's what the carbin cartriges on your RO/DI are for. De-clorinator is much cheaper and easer though, BTW, I rince the de-clorinator off too.
