Question

Blackout as Cure???

I'm still having trouble with cyano after almost 6 months of being setup. I don't want to use chemicals as a cure. I have a 20g Long with 24" lights over it, yes i realize they fall short (but this works well for a zero light specimine). my question is in regards to this 6" of the tank, NO cyano grows there. the lighting is the only difference. would a almost 100% water change at the end of the day when the cyano growth is at it's worst followed by a 2 day blackout help eliminate the cyano? i know the procedure works for hair alge in freshwater. would it have any drastic effects of the corals that require light in my system?

a new lighting system is not an option at this time. new bulbs would be, just tell me what to get (the lighting issue gives me a migrane), i'm probably due for new bulbs.

any feedback would be welcomed pros and cons.

thanks,
christi

What is the flow like in your tank? Cyano can easily build up in areas of low to no water flow. In order for the no light thing to work, you would need to keep the tank in darkness for more then a couple of days, and that would impact your corals.

I would suggest, siphoning up as much of the cyano you can, do a 10-20% water change, and maybe get another powerhead put in the tank to increase water flow. That would be my 2 cents.

Nutrients, the cyano is feeding on something Remove the food and the cyano will subside.
Blacking out the tank will kill it but that releases nutrients and when the lights come on so will the cyano
