Does anyone know what it is, or why? is it any cause for concern?

What is he hosting in? Chances are its caused by the coral he is in.

Actually he hosts a rock, although he has been rather explorative lately. I have seen him poking around in my torch, and my leather.

The torch could be causing it. I would doubt the leather would cause this. It is harmless and pretty common.

Thanks good to know. I was just concerned because these guys are very healthy 2.5yr. olds and have never had anything. They were recently moved from a 12g FOWLR nano, into a 30g with lots of coral.

It is startling to see until you know what it is. I see zoos in the pic above. That is a common cause for this as well. It seems to just be a change in pigment and has no affect on the fish itself.
