Black & White Clown (Ocellaris)
Hello Everyone -
I've been searching for an informative and friendly reef forum that might be able to answer my clown question. I've got a 60gal w/ LR, LS, PC's, sump, refugium, a few soft corals, and a few community/reef safe fish. I plan to add a pair of false percs (ocellaris) and need some help. I prefer the standard orange & white ones but my wife really likes the black & white ones from Australia. I must admit, they are good looking fish also. My question is, I've heard that the black & white ones are a bit more aggressive than the orange & white ones. Is this true? I just had to give away my maroon and sebae anemone because he was too aggressive and I don't want to make the same mistake again. I will be getting a BTA for this pair. I haven't had any luck getting my question answered on other forums and just found your forum recently so with any luck some of you might be able to help. So, which is the best choice if keeping aggression to a minimum is an issue? Any experience, knowledge, or opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

welcome to TRT
I never had trouble with them
same temper as other ocellaris clowns
most of them are tank bred, and very mild mannered

From some of the reading I've been doing it seems that Clownfish of the same species can get along. Both the orange and white and black and white False Perculas are Amphiprion Ocellaris. A lot of clowns are Amphiprion, but they have different species names. I think the different species have problems sometimes

From your quote is it fair to say that since they are both Ocellaris that a black & white and an orange and white would get along? Has anyone ever heard of them forming a pair?

You guys are good! I've been searching other forums and posting this question without any useful response. Thanks for the quick responses so far. I appreciate it. Anyone else have any experience with keeping black & white ocellaris or a one black & white and one orange & white? Is it likely that a black & white and an orange & white would become a "couple" and share a BTA??? That would be interesting. Any thoughts?

Sounds cool. I guess if the orange male has enough fin and game he could lock down a black and white female clown

Helpful, informative, and you've got jokes. Ya, it would be cool if I get a mismatched pair and they "hook up". That would be bananas!

Ha ha. Like that don't you. I am going to either order them or drive up to this spot (That Fish Place) in PA about an hour away. They told me that they could order some and they would be there in a couple of weeks. They would come from Australia. At this point it is just a matter of patience. I will probably have to set up a QT tank. That will be a first. I have all the necessary stuff to jump start it real quick. I just need another tank. My wife will probably throw a fit. This apartment is beginning to look like a store.

Lucky you, I'm in CA. so your LFS is a bit far for me to drive for a pair of Ocellaris, although it might be worth it. I'll have to see if I can get a one of my LFS to order a black & white one for me. I'd imagine I won't have a hard time finding the orange & white one in stock. By the way, I know how you feel about the troubles that come along with adding another tank, I've got an extra 55gal set up in the garage and my wife gave me some crazy looks when she wanted to bring her car in the garage and it wouldn't fit. Between my RO/DI tubs and the extra tank it's getting kinda crowded in there. It's a matter of balancing priorities I suppose.

I believe Marine Depot is based in California. That is who I was going to order from. Here is the link http://www.marinedepotlive.com/blandwhoccla.html
Check them out. You might be the lucky one
