Question

Bizarre thing

It must have come in on some LR. It looks like something out of a horror flick. I was able to identify it as a skeleton shrimp, here is a url:
http://www.museum.vic.gov.au/crust/movcapi.html
Besides it being horribly creepy, will something eat it or should I pick it out of the tank and irradicate it???

Looks cool - why do you want to remove it?

Adrienne will we ever stop being amazed by what creatures live in our reefs. I wonder if it is harmful to anything else! Looks really creepy like you said. Johnny

Adrienne,

How big is it? I saw some critters that were very similar on some rock at the public aquarium last time I was there, the rock had just been brought in from the ocean and put in a display; none of the volunteers working there knew what it was. The ones I saw were about 3/4' long and were anchored to the rock somehow and were bending and dipping for food particles.

Pull it out of your reef immediately and send it to me for further "scientific" study. Don't forget to include a few heatpacks.

Well I watched it for a while. I VERY small copepod wandered by and ZAP!! It bowed forward and grabbed up the little critter and ate him really fast. He is 3/4" long. Very creepy. I dont know what to do with it. I am afraid that it may multiply and do bad things. If nobody knows if its good or not I am inclined to make it go bye bye.

I think it looks really cool! Maybe you could set up a small tank for it and feed it Brine shrimp? I would have a hard time getting rid of it myself.

Hey Adrienne,
Why not get another so they can dance:

They are actually Amphipods and there are both Atlantic and Pacific species. I couldn't find any reference that would suggest they would be harmful; probably wind up as fish food anyway!!!

So far, he has eaten a few pods. If he eats pods and there are two they will breed and eat ALL the pods. I have looked and looked and looked and cant find a dang thing about this beast. He is kewl looking though. I remain undecided.

and yes Dick that is what it looks like.

We had talked about this in chatroom months ago, someone else had one of these and didnt know what it was. Then another person said they are a nuisance to the tank that can capture small fish. Wish we knew for sure. I wouldnt trust it though

:santa:
