Best Pump For Berlin XL Skimmer

After hearing about somebody's Rio melting down and releasing oils into their tank, I want to remove mine before something disastrous haapens to mine. I use a Rio 2500 for my Berlin XL skimmer. What is a good pump to use in it's place?

true, I know felons with better reputations tha Rio pumps. Im not 100% sure that they are compatible but a Maxijet of equal power would be a good choice. I dont know the rating of a Rio 2500 so I cant give you a specific model.

Check to see if they are compatible and if so, id go with th MJ.

A maxi jet won't cut it your gonna need at least a mag7 or even better a mag 9.5 with a ball valve.

My vote is for Aquabee or Ocean Runner.

If you can find them get an OTTO powerhead with a foam preefilter. A 1200 will work wonderfully. Mine has ran 4 + years trouble free being cleaned every 6 months.

Does anyone have the Rio output spec chart handy?
Also output specs for the other popular brands of pumps would be great, Thanks

I have a Berlin classic running with a Mag 9.5. The Mag 9.5 has transformed my skimmer from a relatively decent skimmer into a skimming monster.

Are Mags submersible and is there much heat transfer from them?

Kermit,

Mag drive pumps are submersable. I Run 2 on my 55g. 1 mag7 and 1 mag5. Until I added the second pump for my skimmer I didn't think they put out too much heat. After hooking up the second pump I noticed a 2 degree jump in about 2 hours. I had to add a fan to my sump but since adding the fan i have no heat problems. For the $$$ I think mag drives are hard to beat!!!

I went with the Sedra 12000. Way too much for this skimmer, so I had to add a gate valve to lower the pressure. I will eventually add a tee to it so I can use the excess pressure for circulation. The pump looks very tough and Jeff(Jeff's Exotic Fish) assured me that it was.
