I don't really think a skimmer is called for in a 30gl tank. If you really want one, check into the Remora skimmers. There may be "better" options out there though?????

I would say in the Octo, MSX, or vertex lines. I run a HOB skimmer on my 30 gallon in case I wonder off and forget to change the water

no skimmer needed providing you will be vidulent with
1. larger water changes EVERY week
2. you will follow stocking "guidelines" i.e inches of fish per gallon
3. you wont overfeed

now to be honest id add a skimmer because at times I get lazy so id want something to help when I do forget or get too busy.... I think theres a tendancy to forget that a small tank is just as easy to overstock/pollute as larger ones though 30+% water changes on a 30 gallon is much cheaper (salt+rodi costs) than a 150 gallon plus system as well as much easier and less time consuming for the actual tasks..

if your params stay good without a skimmer its likely you wont need one ...again backk to #1,2 &3

I like my cpr bak pak. Works great and it is reasonably priced. Depending on your bio-load. I have a cpr bak-pak 2 without bioballs. The big thing I like is that the unit is built tough with minimal "parts" to mess with. Just plug it in and adjust the collection cup and your off. They will last forever. The pump is cheap if you ever have problems with that (i havent had problems with the pump either). I do want to add this is the only skimmer I have had experience with but very happy. Some noise equal to a fish tank running but a great item especially if someone is starting out or wants a very low care skimmer. The collection cup is a big factor. Make sure collection cup is decent so you wont have to babysit. Depending on how active I want it to skim. I might empty cup once a day or every other day if skimming normal.

From those who have had a Remora and then an Octo typically recommend the Octo. I have not had the Remora so I cannot speak personally to it's relative effectiveness.

Tony, haven't you ran both?

yep, ran both, hated the remora.

My recommendation is one of the new Warner Marine, Tunze or Octopus.

Sorry for all of the people who are fans of the Remora but I have found them to be junk in more ways then one. I saw a new HOB skimmer from CPR that I thought was revolutionary. The problem with a HOB skimmer is that it’s very inconsistent and requires constant tinkering. The new CPR skimmer is literally a HOB sump with a skimmer inside of it. There is a small pump that feeds the sump and separate pump to feed the skimmer and draw air.

Honestly I have not had the chance to test one out but I have owned a few dozen skimmers and just from experience I can guess that this would be a great skimmer. Maybe do a search on RC and find some hands on review. I apologize but I don’t know what the name is but I’m sure you can find it with a bit of research.
