best angel fish for lps softies reef??

Hello everyone I am looking for an angel for my 80 lps and softies tank and wondering what might be my best bet? I realy the bi-color angels colors along with the singapore angel. In the 500+ marine fish book it says that the singapore poses a moderate threat to lps.... what exactly does that mean??

Hi Jojo;

It means that the angel will probably eat your corals. They seem to find LPS and softies especially tasty. I know a few people who have had luck with certain angels behaving themselves or they are accepting of the fact that the angels may graze on occasion.

Personally, I'd not mix the two.

The Koran Angel is prolly the best angel for a soft/lps reef tank. They only like to eat the polyps off SPS*. Or you could go with a Coral Beauty, which might nip at mushrooms and frogspawn if it's hungry. Flame Angels are supposed to be OK with soft-corals, dunno about LPS.

*there are always exceptions.

The disclaimer is important; so much depends on the taste of the individual fish. I've seen Flame Angels mow down Xenia and polyps, so no guarantees with any of them.

Wow I didnt know koran angels only picked on sps if thats true I might have to start looking for one of those. The thing that scares though is that in scott micheals 500+ marine fishes book it says the koran angel will nip at sessile invertebrates including stony and soft corals. I guess I should research some more on the koran.

Korans will nip at anything they want to! Angels and a reef are 2 things that dont mix well.

Besides a Koran getting way too big for an 80 gallon tank, they are not reef safe at all -- IME. The only corals I haven't seen a Koran eat were Xenia and mushrooms.

I currently have 6 dwarf angels (( would only consider dwarfs for an 80 )), and there is one thing they all have in common --- the LOVE fleshy LPS.

Unless things have changed, it appears that you have an 90 gallon tank, which would/should mean that those large angels are still juvis -- their diet changes with age.
