I have a MR-1 and I am using a MAg 18 pump. I always have the air open all the way and just adjust the water level depending on how I want to skim. It always works great as long as I keep the becket clean!

Good luck

i honestly have tried it that way and it still wont work. I had the gate valve all the way open which gave me the lowest water level in the skimmer and the air all the way open, and all my skimmer did was overflow.

AHHHHH I had to take mine out of the sump for it to work right. I built a equipment stand and put it on it. I had the same problems. I could only barely crack the air with the gate all the way open. Just take it out and put it beside the tank. It will work tons better. I would not run it any other way now. Here are some pics.

the water level in my sump where the skimmers sits is only about 1/2 - 1" from the top of the black skimmer box

well I have no clue then. I just stated my experience. I like having the freedom to adjust the skimmer how ever I want. I had to make it external to be able to do that.

Good luck with your tank. BTW how is it coming?

I've always set my air level as High as I can and still get the smallest bubbles possible, then adjust the water level in the skimmer to set my skimate consistancy.

Thats what i try to do. But for some reason the skimmer will not produce any foam. If i go too high with the air or the water level the skimmer overflows.
