Beach critters in Reef tank

Has anyone any experience in placing critters one finds on the beach in a reef tank ? My 5 year old wants to put the Sand Crabs she finds on the beach in the tank.

Is this a bad idea ?

This is Bethany Beach in Delaware where the water is still rather cold. I don't think the critters she finds will survive in the 78 degrees of a reef tank. We go to that beach alot since we have a vacation home there, I would therefore expect her to want bring other critters she finds on the beach home to put in the tank now that she knows we have a Salt water tank.

I get that temptation a lot. With the exception of one pretty rock nothing has come home with us though.

The tide pools here are so pretty, and added with the almost certain chance of death we leave them be.

I do stick my fingers in all the anemones though and see them close....they must hate me. There are worse fates though like ending up in a glass box of hot water.

Not a good idea.

Sounds like a good Teaching Moment for your Five Year old.

Taking sand crabs from their Beach Home would make them homesick, sad, and stressed.

Best to leave them at home, and he/she can see them AGAIN when you re-visit.

Another "teaching moment" will be when she finds out that people dig them up and use them for surf fishing bait.
