I have a apc battery back ups for my vortechs. The model that runs for 45 minutes is only $60.00. It also doubles as a surge protector. Anything longer and you need a generator.

for a backup the apc is good most people use them to run their COMMAND CENTER,haha but I would only run some power heads in the event of an outage, I lost power for 12 days, no backup, just a friend to come once a day and manully filter thru a sock of carbon and dump the bucket back in, no loss at all!

I like the APCs myself. We have several in our IT department where I work and I use one on my home tank and the tank at the office. When our power goes out it's usually not for longer than an hour at the most and a good APC unit will keep my powerheads, heater, and lights on for that amount of time pretty easily.

I use a 7500 Watt portable generator and a PROPERLY wired transfer switch. The battery backup is just for the Auto-Dialer that calls me if the house loses power.

I use a battery back up to power one of my Tunzes and my ACjr when the power goes out... give me surface rippling for O2 exchange and keeps my pH probe calibration spot on

I'm not sure how long it would last as I haven't had to experience that yet.. As i have said for at least a year or so now... my next big purchase is a generator.
