Question

Basement sump

I'm planning on moving my sump from under my tank stand down into my basement. If I put the sump on a stand in the basement I figure I am looking at about 14' - 16' of head. I was wondering what pumps people would recommend.

I have two Iwaki 40 RLXTs and was wondering if I hook them both up with some sort of manifold whether they would be enough to get a decent circulation going? I'd ideally like to have a 1.5" PVC pipe as the main vertical pipe - although once back behind the tank I'll split into two smaller diameter pipes to supply returns at either end of my tank.

I am planning on getting a couple of Tunze Turbelles for water movement, so I am not too worried about water movement within the tank - just want to make sure that I can get a sufficient amount of water down into the sump and back up again.

Thanks in advance.

K.M.

I have been involved in projects like this in the past and is something I will do in the future. What we did was set a large sump down in the basement directly below the display tank and ran a industrial marine water pump 1 horsepower I believe we got ours from a marine boat place and we also used a heater from a jacuzzi. We had large overflow colums 2 in fact and as the very strong pump would pump it up and out into the tank then it would force the water down and back so even if the power went of there would be no floods. Now what if you do not have sufficient flow back to the pump, I have had that as well and what I did was set up a regular water pump to pump water into the sump so then 2 pumps would have to be utilized. then you have to mess with check valves and worry that the flow is enough here and there not to over flow the sump or have the sump go dry. fun fun sounds that you are about to have a fun project good luck Kevin B

idmk, if you hook the pumps up in parallel, you won't be getting much flow as http://marinedepot.com/aquarium_pump...ion.asp?CartId this chart shows, and if you hook them up in series, you'll very likely burn the upper pump up, but then again.....
Sorry about the link, I can't make it work.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is there any specific pumps people would recommend, assuming that I can't use the Iwakis?

Thanks.
