Bamboo shark egg question -

When purchasing one of these eggs, all it needs is good water flow and to be attached or set on a rock or some area correct? I was wondering will hermit crabs/true crabs bother these eggs? Will they pick at it or try and eat through it? Any precautions on how to hatch this egg? Thanks,

Greg

Websites say 180 gal minimum. But really as an adult they will need closer to a 300 or so. And anything they can fit in their mouths they will most likely eat

those bamboo shards are not the best sharks for the aquarium. there are several others that are better, but are just not sold often in the stores. the bamboo shark grows to over 3' in length as an adult.

you can keep other fish with them but be careful as tangs will nip at their fins and triggers and puffers will also harass these sharks!! i wouldn't reccomend keeping them with lionfish either! They can be in a reef environment but will topple corals if not properlysecured and this can injure or kill the shark!! they prefer caves! A good Tank size should be 240 i would say! They are used to living in confined spaces but tank should be wide enough for an adult to comfortably turn around! They lay on the bottom during the day and swim around a little at night! Its better to hatch your own and experience it in a whole new way! You appreciate it that much more!! the ones i hatched are more active than the one i bought!! They are great sharks and can be kept with fish but be careful as they may eat smaller fish!! Anything bitesized can become a meal! if anyone is intersted in buying any i can get these and live in the atlanta area so just let me know and leave me your email address

there are several smaller species of cat shark that would be better for the average aquarium. the should still be kept in tanks that are at least 6' long. i would say a minimum of a 125g tank. a 180 would be better though.

scyliorhinus retifer-Chain Dogfish grows to a maximum of 18" this one should be fairly common in the trade, but is not.

Atelomycterus macleayi- Marbled Catshark grows to 24". i have seen these on occasion for sale at some distritubors not very common, but a much better choice than the banded cat shark.

Atelomycterus marmoratus- Coral Catshark grows to about 27". very uncommon in the trade, but a very nice looking shark.

there are others, but i have never seen any on any distributors lists. i do search these out several times a year. i plan on keeping an Elasmobranch tank at some point, so i like to keep track of what is available.

if you are really interested in keeping Elasmobranch's please pick up a copy of Scott W. Michaels "Aquarium Sharks & Rays". fortunately or unfortunately- in most cases it will cure anybody of the thought that they can keep a shark in their system. most of the information if have listed above has come from the book.

I can get the marbled catsahrks as well as the coral catsharks! They are beautiful and are actually better candidates because of their smaller size! The book is great!! I have the book as well! I built my shark systems around this book and other proffessional input! I keep bamboo sharks as well as port jackons and am very pleased with them! I have kept sharks for a couple years and can help you with input on your systems as well as finding you the right species! Let me know if you want or need my help!

i can't wait till I get a shark tank. but realistically it will probably be like 4 years till i get one. Would I need all of the same type of filtration that i have in my current tank: canister, uv sterilizer, skimmer?? What live cleeners can i keep with it snails urchins, hermits, shrimp??

I would reccomend a wet/dry system intead of a canister! But Skimmers are a must as sharks put out a lot of waste! As for live cleaners it is kind of tricky because most sharks will eat anything bite sized including ornamental crustaceans! I have a coral banded shrimp with my bamboo sharks and he doesnt get eaten but cleans them instead! I had a star in there but it was eaten! Sharks should be fed 2 to 3 times a week! Overfeeding will cause bad water quality as well as a fast growth rate! Temperatures depend on shark species and should never exceed 80 degrees f! They are evry sensitive and require great water conditions!!

cool. My friend is thinking about getting a snowflake eel. Would you happen to know anything about those. Would the same rules apply as far as tank mates??
