baby starfish in sump
Coolest thing happened today! I was just checking out the tank/pumps etc...and saw this small cream colored thing on the glass of the refugium.....its a baby starfish!! About 1 cm in size and the shape of a star. I guess it is from part of our starfish in the main tank. It looks kinda like a sandsifting starfish which is what we have in the main tank.
Should I move it into the main tank?? Or leave it??? I am nervous I won't be able to find it for a while once it buries itself in the sand. I guess that is o.k. too.
I am trying to find our camera to take a picture of it. As soon as I find the camera I will post a pic.
(BTW also found a baby kenya tree frag growing on a rock in the sump)

If it has more or less than 5 legs, it's probably an asternia starfish.

if you get a pic of it, we can (hopefully) tell you if it's a good one, or a bad one (rarer). At which point you can move it out of the sump, and up into the display!

May want to take it out of the tank while you can see him and put him in a coffee cup with some tank water until we can ID him.

That does look like an asterina starfish, I had a couple in my tank as well. I've read that they are usually algae eaters but some of them may eat corals. The general advice that I got was to go ahead and remove them if you don't want to take a chance. I got one of them out yesterday, the other was on the back glass and I'm waiting for him to pop back out to fish him out. HTH

Asterina Starfish. They are quite prolific and it is debatable whether they are good or bad.

It's an asterina. I found a bunch of them in my nanocube, picked them out and they live in my sump now....wasn't sure if they were bad or not!

Don't toss him....I had these appear in my 125 on some LR...they soon multiplied like crazy. They never bothered anything, and were pretty cool. I bought a Harlequin to control the populations and have really enjoyed both the shrimp and hte stars
