Awesome sight!!
Ok, i'm in love with banggais. I was just watching my male. His mouth is so full he can't keep it shut. I could see the little babies swimming around in there..and little sets of eyes peering back at me!! A little fin would start to come out and he would open his mouth and suck the little one back in! What a sight. Wish I could get a pic of that. Looks like these little ones are ready. I'll probably move the male to the 38g today or tomorrow.

Brooke,
You gave me some advice earlier in regards to the Cardinals I have doing the "shimy", and if they weren't, that I had two females. Well, I have been doing some serious watching, and I do have a male and female. They are doing the "vibrating fins" thing when they swim around each other, and the males mouth is getting bigger underneath and a appears to be swollen. I just did notice it last night. I hope I am not seeing things, but I fed this AM, and the female ate like a pig, and the male just swam thru the food not opening his mouth at all. I'll try and get pics when I can and let you know. One thing I noticed, say from two weeks ago, I believe the female is a shade or two lighter than the male. Is this what you have seen with yours?

Hambone...
Hurry, run to the grocery store and get a pregnancy test, cuz it sounds like you are gonna have some babies!!
If the males cheeks are noticably larger, and he is not eating, those are very good signs....especially if you saw the female doing her shimmy dance. "Gestation" for these guys is 24-28 days. My male went about 28 days last time. This time, I imagine will be closer to 23-24. He will not eat during this time, and if he starts to eat again, it is because he is no longer holding the eggs.
Congrats...you think you might try to raise the babies??

Brooke,
I feel like I should call Hoss and Little Joe Cartwright to go get Hop Sing to boil some water and start gathering towels...
Seriously, I doubt I can do much to keep the babies, as I have the 75g they are in currently, which is all reef safe fish and coral, but, I know the babies will get chomped up when he releases them. My other 55g has triggers and wrasses in it, so that would not work.
I'll just enjoy this event and hope they do it again soon.?

Congratulation Brooke and Randy. We are getting ready to start breeding Banggai's ourselves. We have a 30 gallon tank for the mated pair to live in full time and a couple of 10 gallon tanks to grow out the babies. Now we just need to sve up and get a mated pair.

Congrats Brooke! Wow, sounds like such a great thing you have going on there! I am still here trying to decide whether I want to start fresh with a new pair which will actually let the eggs hatch, or if I want to keep my full-grown cardnials but no babies... oh well, keep up the great work, fearless leader!

Hehe...Dick's so creative
Randy and Andrew-
We have had really good luck with the babies in a modified 10g tank. Go to www.northernreef.org and look at the past tanks section for the 6 gallon LT1. This is what we are using for the babies...a sectioned off 10g with lots of live rock in the back, heater, power filter, etc. We turn off the pump when feeding, then turn it back on when done. When the babes were really little we put a piece of filter pad over the overflow.
Anyway, I highly recommend something like this for raising them when they are little bitty. I couldn't catch the male easily today. We might try tonight, but I don't want to stress him and cause him to swallow the babies. So, we might just get what babies we can out of the overflows again. Planning to add netting to the overflows so they won't get sucked into the sump...or go to the bottom of the overflow in the bristleworm den.

Brooke,
My 75g is setup with an ecosystem refugium. My question is.. could I net some of the babies outta there if he releases them and stick them in the refugium to grow?

Randy-
You could try..but they would probably starve unless you fed them baby brine everyday.
Alice-
I'll probably sell/trade some with the local reef club, then sell what's left to the LFS's.
Our big babies are in the 38g now. We await the arrival of the new little ones.
