Yep! I love my mr-1...a bit o'advice
Once you get it set up, let it run for at least a week before fiddling with it. Only make adjustments so that it doesn't go nuts and overflow lots of water.
I'm having the best luck with the sump water level just over the black box.
Once the skimmer seems stable, start playing around with the needle valve bit by bit to get the best skimmate.
Be patient, I've had mine for just over a month and I'm just starting to get it dialed in.

Wow. Big one! I hope you have a fish room! You gonna plumb it outside the sump? Is that whole milk?

Umm..now I know people love to see skimmate in their collection cup.. but to see a milk carton in the pic..makes me worried that you are getting skimMILK confused with skimMATE.

I agree with Noob. I didnt realy start to get mine tuned for a couple months. Once you get it dialed it will crank! I also have raised mine so that the sump level is just to the top of the box. Keep the cotton in the silencer clean also.
Wheres your gate valve?
Congrats on the score these are great skimmers! I also have the same pump, no problems at all. Set it on a couple mouse pads and it will be much quieter and there wont be any transfer of vibration throught the stand.

hahahah
actually, it fits under my tank in the stand...but I'm sitting here debating that while it does fit...is it the best route to go? not sure if it'll be easy to get to.
So I've though of installing it outisde the stand...but Oceanic (who is usually pretty good about getting back to me), hasn't gotten back to me on whether drilling two holes in the stand will void my warranty. Or even MORE important, will it comprimise the integrity of the stand itself.
still wondering.
and yes...whole milk is the ONLY way to go!

yeah...I figured I wouldn't get any really good goop for a few weeks. I have some questions for you other MR owners though:
1. Should I continue running my old prism skimmer while this one's breaking in? or will running the other skimmer slow down the break in period?
2. The Gate valve hole....does this spit out the clean water itself? I mean..I'm plumbing mine OUTSIDE the sump...do I need a pump to pump the water BACK to the sump from this big hole? or will force be enough? Not really sure how this is gonna work.

Most out of sump set ups Ive seen the skimmed water is just ran back into the sump through a bulkhead. Thats means a drilled sump. Dont use another pump as you would be messing with the equilibrium in the skimmer and it could be a real bear to tune. If you have the room (not likely in the stand!) you could run a pipe from the valve to the sump with a "T" at the end where the water would drop into the sump with the top of the "T: open to prevend a siphon effect inside the skimmer. This would require the skimmer to be raised above the sump.
