Thanks to Ros, campaign manager/coordinator and secretary of the QASDA, for
this information:
Journalist, Andrew Carroll, arranged ABC radio coverage with Dave Lowe, for
two mornings on AM Radio 6.12 4QR, and we received excellent publicity. On
Thursday, he interviewed first Professor Ian Lowe, who talked about the
fishery and the sustainability report and the greater risks to the reef.
Then, Senator Hill spoke - his statements were still the same themes…
"inappropriate; hammer and chisel; a person can't take even a tiny piece of
coral, but these divers take 50 tonnes; most Australians would be shocked
if they knew, I am inundated with letters about the health of the reef,
etc." Andrew Carroll countered with, "But Senator, isn't it a bit like
taking a bike off the road to save the bitumen, and leaving the trucks and
buses?" Senator Hill also said how Queensland did not have a management
plan for the coral, and Dave Lowe (no relation to Ian Lowe) took great
delight in emphatically responding, "With respect Senator Hill…….." He and
Merle Brown described how the coral is harvested and marketed and who buys
and keeps it. A caller named Andrew phoned in on talk-back and described
what he had seen happening in Asia, and the risk of a black market
happening here if the industry was closed. Ros Paterson phoned in also and
was delighted to tell how Senator Hill had gone over the heads of GBRMPA,
AIMS, JCU, to decide that he alone knew what was best for the reef; that he
had ignored all the scientists, paid to look after our GBR, and once we
started to decide the future of our country based on whether an activity or
enterprise was "appropriate", instead of using scientific fact, all
activities and enterprises in Australia, were at risk of this political
abuse of power.
On Friday, Assoc. Prof Vicki Harriott was interviewed. She refuted Senator
Hill's claims of "mining", describing mining as occurring in those
countries which carve out blocks of coral for construction purposes, and
this was definitely not what was happening here. She described precisely
how the coral is harvested, and refused to be drawn into arguments about
"appropriateness", sticking entirely to the scientific facts. Imogen
Zethoven of World Wildlife Fund for Nature expressed the point of view that
coral was a luxury item, and there should be no taking of coral from the
reef. Then Jared Patrick, of PIJAC (Pet Ind. Joint Adv.Council) responded
with statistics about the size of the retail aquarium market - 5000
employees, 30% of the trade is marines, etc, the reasons for keeping marine
aquariums is the pleasure, the knowledge gained, the future regeneration of
worldwide reefs, etc. He refuted one of Senator Hill's claims by saying if
someone without a driving license is not allowed to drive, that does not
mean you take all licensed drivers off the road. Dave Lowe concluded with a
comparison that all fisheries these days produce only luxury items, Andrew
Carroll countered with the fact that the other fisheries produce protein.
Dave replied that the price of all fish from all fisheries is unaffordable
anyway by most people. Overall - a great hearing!
