are these hydroids ?
a few of my rochs have these little guys on them. they seem to grow in small patches of a few "polyps". they are brown in color, and have a hint of green fluorescence under actinic light. when you annoy them, they disappear into their tube, which seems "leathery" they are pretty small, i guess about 1/4"
here's the best picture i could manage

They do look like hydroids. I've never had them before, but for other pests I've not hesitated to burn them or chip them off the rock. It's about the only sure way to remove them in one shot.

Those look nothing like the hydroids I had in my tank. Mine were colonial hydroids though, and I am sure there are many different types so I guess they could be. That just looks like another type aiptasia to me though.

They can overtake a tank and sting everything, they can harm certain coral if let out of control. The ones I had actually detached themselves and swam around like little jellies.

that seems to be an exact match of what i have (apart from the majano and aiptasia that is . it looks like you had quite a lot more of them though. how long did it take for them to spread out like this ?
the little group in the picture that i posted took about 6 months or so.

Look like Hydroids to me too. I've had them for years, and I've seen them grow, then die back, then grow again over the years. I have a couple patches and they are really just about as big as when I got the live rock.
I've tried to kill them, but nothing including a 16.5 hour power outage seems to work.
I'm lucky that they don't take over,.. if you can find a way to kill them do it,.. and let me know how.

I have no idea. For a long time I thought they were pretty cool. Then I realized that I had a forest of baddies on that rock. Threw the rock out. Period. That was my solution.
