are seios good powerheads? theyre made by rio
Im getting a 40 soon for sps. I want a high turnover of maybe 40x. That means I need 1600gph. The overflow will provide approx 500gph with the mag 7 as a return. I also will need powerheads in the main tank to make up for the extra 1100gph I need.
seio seems like a decent pump, tunze streams start at 1600gph which seems pretty high considering my tank size. I don't even mind replacing it every 6 months but I really don't want to have to deal with electrical 'issues' in my tank that could kill my fish or worse me.
btw I don't want a cls because I will have to deal with pvc pipes and I'd much rather be able to play with the location of the powerheads to provide for best flow, eliminate dead spots, and keep the sand on the bottom where it belongs.

Go with another brand, IMO. Hagens have worked well for me, mine are all over a year old.

looking at the hagens it seems like there is some way to get air into the pump to increase flow... can you elaborate on this??? maybe that pump will work for me but i'm curious about the air.?

You do not want the air into the pump. IIRC the air is used for FW tanks to provide oxygen to the water sort of like a venturi.
Spend the money and get a Tunze.

I have had three of the 800 SEIO's for almost a year with no problems what so ever. The good thing about them compared to standard powerheads is the dispersed flow pattern. JMO

I have had great luck with Maxi-Jet powerheads. They're small, powerful, and they ALWAYS work. Like four of those placed stragically around would have a great effect. They also have the best suction cup system, IMO.

Thanks I just don't know if I really want FOUR powerheads in my tank either... That's why I like the seio pumps since they have a high gph and seem to spread the flow out... so you get water movement not high velocity. I would only need 2.
I wouldn't mind spending the $$$ on a tunze in fact I would do it in a second if I didn't think the 1600gph was gonna be way too much for my 40gal with ssb (the sump return will be at 500gph). Also I want random turbulent flow... one tunze would just have all the water coming from one direction the whole time.
I am thinking of one pump on the back left one on the back right pointed at the front glass. That should make some random movement in the tank...

The crappy thing about Tunze at the moment seems to be the lead times on it. 3 months to get product is what I've been hearing. So, it's not only expensive, but you have to wait. Two things I can't stand!
