Are Rio Water Pumps and Powerheads Risky?

I know there had been talk of Rio powerheads breaking down in people's tanks and leaking their chemicals or oil into the water. Is that still the case, or has Rio improved their products? Thank you.

Chad

What do you plan on using the Rio for? Is it just for a PH then look at the Maxijets. If it were as a retrun pump look at the Mag Pumps.

Ive had at least 3 major crashes related directly to RIO PHs and Pumps. Friends and the LFS owner have also had similar luck.

I have heard but never had the problem. We sell alot of them on CPR bak Paks and never had anyone have a problem. I can't say for sure. Don't want to slam a company that sells thousands of them. We sell many and have never had a someone come back to us and say it malfunctioned.

I inherited a 90 with six rio pumps that were used when I got them in their defense. None of them is running today. All of my maxijets and my Mag 3 run fine.

Just my independent data points to add.

They work great on the shooting range. My SKS can blow right through them.

Ha Ha....thanks for everyone's replys. I especially like the last one. I was planning on using it in the back of my Nano Cube. I have a Maxi Jet 1200 but it's just not creating the strength of flow I'm looking for. I was hoping to find a pump with more GPH, but similar in size and power consumption as the Maxi Jet. There are so many pump choices, and someone had suggested a Rio, but I think from the responses that I will pass and keep looking. Thanks.

I've been running my rio to support the cpr skimmer for 4 years now 24/7 and I had no problem at all. Well maybe because I keep it clean and followup on maintenance regularly. I've heard that it was redesigned but that's the first and last rio I've ever used due to bad report regarding these devices.

Currently,I'm mostly using maxijet on my other tank and it's been quite an experience due to durability. These powerheads ( maxijets ) are quiet also!

So, it's your choice!

Bingo, that is the key keeping it clean. That is why the maxijets are nice. They are more forgiving on that.

I think I'm going to keep looking. I'd rather not take the risk. If anyone can suggest a powerhead that is stronger than the maxi jet 1200, but similar in size and cool running, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

If for flow I am doing the Seio's because of low consumption and higher volume. They are made by the same company as the Rio's but never heard a complaint against them (and they do NOT have oil inside them) and I know a lot of people who run them.

The problems is that I'm using it as a return pump in my nano cube so it's hidden in a compartment in the back. There is limited space....just enough for a maxi jet 1200....but having such a small tank, I need to keep the heat as low as possible.
