Are parasites visible?
Hi guys,
My powder brown tang looks like he has "flaky skin" or something, it doesn't look like his scales, it looks like a person having flaky skin I guess is the only way to describe it. He won't slow down so I can't get a better look or I'd try to be more descriptive. So my question is - are parasites visible - or what else is going on here. I still consider myself a novice at SW so any thoughts would be appreciated.
(Plus I almost lost the whole tank Thursday night - someone, somehow for some unknown reason died and the clean up crew failed for the first time and it polluted the whole tank - the death is still under investigation - so now I'm a little paranoid)
Thanks!
Mindy

are fleas visible?
there are many different kinds of parasites. several are easily visible with the naked eye. some able to be seen from many feet away also.
as for the tank nearly crashing, do you have any algae in the tank?

Do you think "flaky skin" could possibly be parasites - how do I find out or treat it?
As for algae, this sounds dumb - but what am I looking for? I have normal build-up on the glass I think. Basically I have a LRFO tank and try to keep things low maintenance

could you post a pic of the fish?
do you have any large macro algae growing in the tank? there are several types of algae that will suddenly die off and can start a chain reaction in a tank. in most cases a single fish/critter dying in a tank will not crash an entire tank unless it is allowed to stay in the tank for several days.

does it look like salt sprinkled on the fish? can you describe the flakes? (small, big? round? fuzzy? color? anything might just help)

He is a total spaz and won't slow down for me to get a better look, but they look copepod shaped - a little longer than a square salt crystal, but very small and white, and he is definitely trying to scratch himself.
