are flame scallops that bad?
Just got one yesterday and was a little worried about what I had read about them. Are they really that bad? Short life span? Hard to feed? It look awsome in my tank though. My wife loves it. The guy at the lfs said they just filter the water, very low maintenance. Is this true? Any thoughts? My last post (diff subjet) I got no replies hopefully I get something this time lol.

They are very short lived in our systems, more then likely they don't get the food they need.

They require a specialized tank and specialized feeding to get them to even survive, let alone thrive.
Best left alone in the ocean.

I have known some people with very large systems that managed to keep them alive but in general they are likely to slowly starve in home aquariums.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

99% starvation/death rate...it's nearly impossible to provide the necessary food in most tanks.

We just can't supply enough food for them with out drastic nitrate/algae problems.

It is difficult to provide the levels of food that they need. If you didn't mind a tank with nearly green water or loads of particulate matter floating around, it could probably be done. Flame scallops are not compatible with the ultra clean water system that we all strive for.

They are specialist feeders...I did some research on them a while back and it seems the scientific evidence on them states that the size food they prefer is phytoplankton in the 5-40 micrometer range (1/25 to 1/200th of a millimeter)...this is much smaller than the typical invert foods available...providing this type of specific food in captivity is nearly impossible.

I had a buddy that bought 3 at one time about 2 years ago all but 1 withered and died. But he has had it for over 2 years. They can be kept. (I would never try though)
