If you are planning a FO tank then the Trickle filter would serve a purpose, but I still think good old live rock is the best filter.

If you are planning a reef then definitally forgo the bioballs, they turn into nitrate factorys over time.

I think the best setup you can go with is a Reef ready tank and a sump due to it's flexibility, I am not a fan of all in one setups,... because often if something doesn't work like you want it to you can't change it.

Is it possible to use bioballs, but clean them every month or so. that way they dont get all the build up?

It would probably work out cheaper too Whiskey. For the Aqua Medic 4ft which includes all pumps/powerheads, heater and MH's its $4500AU. Could probably go 6ft for less doing it myself/having someone do it.

They are just not the best way to go, they tend to make things fit and look good, Not to say they don't function, they do, You can do much better

No , I am talking about the set up with everything in the back of the tank, Nothing wrong with reef ready and wet dry, Alot of people will pull the bio balls out and just use it as a sump. to place skimmer, heater and the like and add water to the system.
