Anyone used a pond pump?

Ok, here is the deal....I am wanting to setup another tank using mostly things i already have. I have a Beckett pond pump that i currently use to move RO water into my topoff container. I would like to use it to return water from the sump on my new tank. Has anyone had any experience with the "off lable" use of pumps?

I would think you would have to be careful and do some research on that type of pump and make sure that it wont crode in the salt water. Rust in a tank = DEATH

Good Luck

most pond pumps have metal shafts that will rust. you may want to look into what metal is exposed on the pump before submitting it to the torture of salt water.

without trying to hijack the thread, I'm glad to hear this about rust.. it was something I wondered about and had planned to fix in my tank. When my bro-in-law set my tank up for me, he used a metal hose clamp around the connection to the return pump I've noticed that it's rusted pretty good, and it is usually underwater. I plan to replace it when I redo my sump in a couple weeks. I also know he used a Little Giant pump for the return pump (don't remember what model) and I know Little Giant makes pond pumps. But the pump has been running for over 3 months now without any problems. I know the clamp is rusty as all get out, I would think if the pump were that rusty, it'd have siezed on me by now. Should I be concerned?

Aren't the Mag pumps sold as pond pumps? Pondmaster, or something like that...?

I've had much luck with Mag pumps. Long lasting buggers, too!

Mags are by a pond pump company, The Danner Mfg. They are called utility pumps often. Or outdoor pumps. I have seen other pumps that look like them also.

pondmaster and mags are the same. pondmasters have longer cords due to thier application. I have heard many people using them with no problem. I don't know about your brand.
