Anyone keeping a trigger in a reef?

OK OK OK! I know it's not common to find a "reef safe" triggerfish but I was just wondering if anyone is having success with one. That being said, I am not planning on running out and getting one for my reef. I may start another tank for a trigger and maybe an angel. I wish I could keep one in my reef but I am having real good luck with my tank lately and would not risk it for any fish.

There are a few triggers considered "reef safe"... that is to say they are harmless to corals, and only really post a risk to small ornamental shrimp and crustaceans.

I've got a client with a small Niger Trigger in his 120. I've seen Pink Tails and Blue Jaws kept in reefs, as well as Crosshatch.

I had a trigger once. That guy moved some of my rock around. They call em "Trigger" fish because when they "sleep" they wedge their dorsal fin so that they're stationary and it's kinda cocked up like a trigger. They're pretty aggressive so unless you've got equally aggressive fish I'd steer clear of these guys. If you can find yourself a tank raised trigger I hear they're much more Community-tank-friendly. =)
As far as eating coral, invert's, etc, you won't have much of a problem as long as you feed him well. They're awesome fish. Post a pic when you get him!

I had a Sargassum Trigger in my 75g. He was my alltime favorite fish. Sadly he ate my peppermint shrimp, one of my cleaners, and a couple of emerald crabs. I think that I may have caused the problem, by feeding him a small crab from one of my acros. After that things began to disapear, I didn't know what was causing it. One day I saw the Trigger going nuts after one of my cleaner shrimp. That was it! The reef in my house has one rule...Get along with everyone, or you're gone!

Something to consider is bioload with a fish that gets that big. You may not be able to keep nitrates/phosphates down low enough to have corals and some inverts

this is an old argument but for some reason it draws my attention everytime, triggers are my favorite fish and I dont have one because I've been scarred.......but maybe I'll try a niger for my next fish, I hear their not as agressive
