Anyone ever drilled a cheap tank from petsmart??

i wanna make a sump out of one of the cheapo tanks from pets mart the top fins i couldnt find anywhere if it is tempered or not i jsut need to find a cheap ten gallon i can drill for external return pumps

Depends what tank it is, I used to work there and they are same as the Perfectos. You just need to check what color sticker it has when it was inspected.

Don't mean to jack the thread...but I have run into similar problems. Is there anyway to tell if an old tank is tempered before you drill it and crack it

the general rule i have seen from most manufacturers is that the sides are never tempered but the bottom is. most labeling on the tank will say if it is otherwise. i see no reason why you can't drill the sides. it is really thin though so don't be surprised if it breaks from the procedure.

10-gallon tanks, no matter what the brand, are hard to drill without cracking as the glass is so thin.

Better buying a 20-gallon tank and drilling that. Sides are not tempered, only bottoms.

I looked into a 20 long from petsmart for a sump. The label said not to drill so I called the 800#. According to them the whole thing was tempered. hth
