Not needed but nice to have. I have been able to close them if I have to work on the sump.

just plumbed mine... I put one in.

Don't have any idea how often I'll use it, but if I use it once, it will be worth it.

There is a design for a silent overflow that uses no durso or stockman and it relys on a valve. basically it consists of one pipe for overflow, short. and a higher one to handle a problem in the main drain. The main is slowly reduced via the valve to balance the flow. What you end up with is water significantly above the drain and no air getting in thus no noise. The higher pipe is there in case something gets into the main and clogs it.
If I had a smaller return pump Id try it but I like flow too much!!!!

Do you have a picture of that? Your description was good, but I think I am missing something.

not needed but like Vinnie siad he uses it to clean his sump. It is nice when you turn the power off to close that so the sump wont fill up.

This is real basic but it shows the two drain pipes. The lower one would actually be draining while the higher one would act as a back up. The circle on the lower one is the valve and the line going across the middle is the water level. Robert
