Anemone?

Is this some sort of anemone growing on my rock? Is it safe?

Do you have a shot under daylights. It does not look like a pest in that pic but it is a little hard to tell.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Looks kind of like a tiny rock flower anemone. I would keep an eye on it. Does it tend to avoid the lit areas?

I just got the rock a couple days ago. It seems to have a hard stationary shell. I'm really unsure though. I have not noticed it avoid any light, it seems to like it. There is a tiny one just above it. It's hardly noticeable.

If you touch it lightly with a feeding stick or something does it close up...nems will normally close up tight if messed with.

Well then, it looks like and sounds like a nem. Is this a new tank? If so it may not survive the fluctuations of a new tank. As for being a "pest", I guess all you can do is watch and wait...generally pest nems are considered such because they reproduce quickly and and can rise to epic numbers overtaking your prized (and expensive) livestock.

That is NOT an anemone that is a hidden cup coral polyp. Note the stony cup shaped skeleton below the polyp. I have about 12 of these in my tank. They are asymbiotic and prefer shaded areas. You will need to feed them if you want to keep them. Mine will take cyclop-ezee but i am sure small pieces of shrimp are better.

WoW!! Good call. It's exciting to know its not a pest and it's a coral. Thanks for the identification. He will get extra mysis for dinner tonight.
