alkalinity

Ok...can someone explain the alkalinity thing to me? My tank has always been at an alkalinity of 13dKh (about 2 years). Ph is normally 8.3 and CA 320-400 +/-. Over the last couple of days I noticed that my Sebae anemone (had for 2 years) was looking upset. I had a bulb that was getting old so I replaced that but also tested my water. My alkalinity was down to 8dKh. Everything else that I test was OK. CA was 320 but I have no SPS so I think I'm ok here. NO3 was 0 or at least less than 5ppm. No ammonia, NO2, and PH was 8.3. So, what causes alkalinity to drop? I do use Kent duperbuffer very rarely, and maybe it's just been too long. Any suggestions? Maybe this is what has my anemone grumped up?

Yeah..I think you answered your own question there. Depending on how often you are doing water changes, you probably just need to add some buffer on a regular schedule.

As far as the anemone goes..is it possible that is might be getting ready to split? I've read many times that they start looking bad before splitting. Just a thought.

You know, I think I need to do some more research on the reproductive habits of hetaractis crispa (sebae). I'd absolutely love for this anemone to split...it's getting to darn big for my 50g tank. Well, time to start using more buffer!
