Aggressive reef
Hey everyone, right now i have a 90 gallon with 30 gallon sump/fuge and was wondering if i could do an aggressive reef. The fish list would be:
Antennata Lionfish
Gold stripe maroon clown
Yellow tang
Royal gramma
A few small fish
I already have the royal gramma and yellow tang.
Or should i just do a normal reef with a bunch of little critters. Thanks for all the advice, Matt

If anything fits in the Lionfish's mouth consider it gone. I would add him last too or just skip that part of the list but then there is nothing all that agressive. I have an aggressive reef in a 125 and have no problems. Having a heavy fish load helps feed some of the softies and lps in my opinion. I have a pair of large triggers, a moray eel that is about 3 feet and a miniatus grouper along with a Vigrate rabbit fish. I think agressive is the way to go but that is my opinion. If you have conflict it can be quite frustrating. Good luck and do pdate us with how things go! Steve

Ok i guess i can try it. I want to stay away from eels though. But besides that do you have any fish suggestions.

i wouldnt put the gramma in with the others, those are pretty small and calm fish, could get ugly, the others you mention would be cool though.

That gold stripe maroon will definitly run anything off from it territory. I am think about trading him in because he is to aggressive toward the other tank mates. You would have to watch the yellow tang closely.

i'd heard that lionfish dont like incredibly bright lights. but ive got nothing to back that up. so if no one else chimes in assume i'm wrong.

imo antenneta's are finicky, tough to find good specimens, and more often than not fail to survive long.
If I were to suggest a couple fish on the more 'aggressive end of the peaceful side' (lol, if that makes sense) it would be the dwarf fuzzy lion (very personable, small, and easy to ween off of live food), one of the smaller hawkfishes like the longnose hawk or falco (pixie) hawk, flame hawk - be aware that the hawks (esp. the flame) like to eat little hermits on occasion. a dwarf angelfish would be an excellent choice for that mix I think.
good luck!

problem with aggresive fish, is they are usually big eaters
which will turn into big waste
= bigger filter
= more water changes
= adding a bigger clean-up crew, which they will probably eat
= more headaches from battling algea blooms
I did a damsel reef, and I must say it was pretty cool and aggresive
I needed to add them in groups of 4-6 in a hope to have 3 survive
