Advantages to Sump Systems

What are the advantages to having a sump system? Obviously I don't have a sump, but it seems that all of the tank builds on TRT do. I realize that it hides skimmers and it's easier for water changes, but that can't be all.
Thanks in advance for any response.

One advantage is additional water volume. More water volume = more stable system.

it is a place to hide all of the uglies. temp probes, skimmer, Ca reactors, heaters, return pump.

are they necessary no. they sure make life easier and less cluttered though.
