Adding Supplements while Cycling Tank

I'm about to purchase several items online and have been contemplating purchasing several additives as well. I have been told that adding the following will help the survival rate of organisms growing on/in my LS and LR, enhance corraline algae growth, shorten cycle time, etc.. etc.. Looking for someone to offer suggestions on what I should or should not use. If I'm supposed to use some of these additives, should it be during the cycle or after the cycle when the tank is in a "steady-state."

Black Powder
Coral Vital
Coral Vital LSB (Live Sand Booster)
Spectra Vital
CombiSan
AragaMilk

Thanks in advance! - Brandon

Hello,

During your cycle I would not add anything. I think that if you start adding the products too early, you will aid and encourage an algae bloom. The best thing that you can do for your tank is to take your time, post questions, read and research.

The jury is out weather some of the items you mentions actually do anything other than drain your wallet. I would only add what you can test for and maybe some Stromium and Moly but that is up to you. In a reef tank I add:

1.) Calcium when needed.
2.) Alk buffer when needed.
3.) Iodine for the polyps when needed.
4.) Stromium and Moly (Sparingly)

When I was new I started added the stromium and moly additive too early and it ended up encouraging a bad algae bloom that turned into a mess. Depending on how big your tank is, you might not have add anything at all and just let the water changes keep supplying what you need. For now, just sit and watch you tank cycle and use only RO or DI water.

I wouldn't add anything at all.

And in my personal opinion, I wouldn't bother adding any of those to an established tank either. Waste of money that could be spent elsewhere more effectively.

When we were newly into the hobby, we added a bunch of supplements and spent a lot we didn't need to. Now, we add calcium via B-Ionic or kalkwasser, but nothing else.

If you can't tell, I'm rather anti-supplement. Many of us are.
