Acanthurus leucosternon question

I was reading that this fish is sexually dimorphic. Does anyone know if there is anyway of sexing them? IF I were to get one of these fish I'd want to be gauranteed to be getting a male, am I dreaming?

Hi Troy,

I'd love to know of features that allow sexing of Powder blue Tangs --that would be applicable to aquarium-size fish, and against LFS-display-quantity populations.

IIRC (If I recall correctly), it's mostly body size and fin shape --features too hard to judge within a small sample.

Really, if there's a way to sex them easily, I would love to learn!

I find that my ignorance is greatest about the species of fish that I regularly eat. I sorta dismiss them as just food, ya know? Whether fried or steamed, salt-dried or stewed, I looooove my labahitang asul!

Horge,

Thanks for the reply. I figured my chances of getting an answer were slim and, considering I'd be more than likely buying a juvenille, none.

I've never eaten surgeon fish before but I'd have imagined that they'd be pretty bony, I guess you can't eat a judge a fish by its scales. You should make an excuse to visit the Pacific Northwest and I'll treat you to a BBQ of salmon or maybe you'd rather keep one in your aquarium .

Horge would need a chiller

I've eaten Unicorn and Naso tang; it was quite tasty. Although I didn't eat the heads, my hosts seemed to enjoy them

Im sure I have had surgeon, they are a little tangy for me,hhehehehe. I do love sushi bars, hold the Ika, I never met a squid I ever liked, tho anything else is chow.
BTW salmon and rice with sweet vinegar and wasabi makes a nice sushi roll
Gonna throw the Peppermint shrimp in cocktail sauce, it cheated my out of my fritters
But to answwer the original question, I havent run across any definitve gender ID in 25 yrs Since they get large in the while they may not exhibit breeding differences in the typical home aquarium

Chiller??
Here's your chilling:
I'll just put the sucker in the fridge, har har, go sightseeing, wrap it in foil, and off to the airport for home

But no...
Why bother with transport/storage hassles, I'd just stuff it all in my gut, on-site, chase it with a cold one ("chill" right there)
