a wierd one for ya

The pic below is a little old, this guy is about 3 inches long and 1 1/2 wide. I believe it to be an olive shell. I geuss I should hunt him down and put him in the refrgium but he eats this Pink encrusting Monti thats going nuts in my tank. His foot and soft tissue is a deep deep purple. and when he kicks it into gear he can really move.

Yep the shell is always exposed. His shell is more refined in its pattern. on the base of the shell thier is a layer of, Skin I will call it. It is covered in soft spikes. Thier is a red hermit that always follows it around the tank. It used to only come out at night but now days it works 24/7

Mojoreef,
Most probably a Cowry. (Cypraeidae) The "skin" that partially covers its shell is the mantle.
Here is a site with links to a couple hundred pics of the different species........enjoy; hope you have a faster modem than I!

Nope its not a cowery. I thought it was and got into a deep arguement with doc shimrick. He gave exactly 11 technical reasons why it wasn't a cowery. I stopped after three and just believed him.

I'm pretty sure its in the olive family, the doc agree's.
