a reefkeeper's philosophy

As a first time poster to TRT, I'd like to extend my greetings to all the members. Scanning through the various postings and archives, I must say that I've been impressed with the level of civility and humor it's members have displayed. Without a doubt, it's the most friendly board I've come across. I look forward to becoming an active member, although I will tend to only post when I believe I really have something to contribute or need the advice of the members at large.

An article which I read a while back might be of great help and interest to the "newbies" and indeed, even the "oldhands" in the field. It represents with great accuracy my own personal philosophy (if I could only write as elegantly) and I would hope to see more aquarists adopt it as their own. The article is in two parts. Please, read the 2nd part if you take the time to read the 1st...also, the important "Feedback on the Tao" comments from Dr. Heideman which follows the 2nd part.

"The Tao of Marine Aquaria" by Adam Whitlock

Part 1: http://petsforum.com/fishnchips/2000/fnc1100.html

Part 2: http://petsforum.com/fishnchips/2000/fnc1200.html

Enjoy!

Best Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve-
Glad you found us here at TRT and liked what you saw. We're a pretty good bunch of people, if I do say so myself.

That is an excellent article..very well written. Thanks for the links!

BTW, I used to live in Hamburg. I miss Germany terribly. Hopefully I can make it back one day!

Hi Brooke,

I try to make it back to the States at least once or twice a year, but I doubt that I'll ever live there again. Life here is just too sweet!

Indeed, I've only found a few drawbacks to living in Germany. 1)We have to fly at least 4 hours to reach the nearest reef , 2) other than a few specialists who have frequent contact with the States, the marine aquarium scene hasn't advanced beyond the "Berlin" system (with a name like that, go figure), and 3) because of 1&2, LFS's think you must be decended from royalty and are obviously a victim of inbreeding who can't possibly think for yourself and therefore, you can afford their ridiculous prices and should be grateful for the pitiful selection.

Still miss it?

If you ever do make it back over for a visit, let me know. Because of 1,2&3, we still drink a LOT of beer!

Cheers,
Steve
