a little Scolymia advice please
Hi everyone,
Just looking for a little advice. I had to move one of my scoly's (my fav one) about two weeks ago, and now it is higher in the water column, about 12 inches from top water. flow is also increased from where he was.
Anyway, just wondering if most of you keep your scoly's pretty low on the reef and/or in the substrate. He isn't getting as extended as he did in his previous spot, but is still looking pretty darn good.
Should I move him again, or give him a little more time where he is?
Thanks

I'd put him back where you had him. They really don't like bright lights or high flow. They will retract, as you have seen, and over time their color will fade if light and flow are to strong. This just makes them weaker and more susceptible to infection and other problems.

I can't put him back due to a moving bta...but I should try and find a similar-type place?

Thanks EC,
I did end up moving him...again! I moved a piece or two of rock and got him a nice place in the front of the tank, about 4 inches off the bottom.
I wish I never had to move him in the first place...but those nems have plans of their own!
Thanks again for the advice.

I have two recommendations for you: first, move the Scoly into a low-light, low-flow setting as low in the tank as possible (or possibly in a shadow), and to prevent further problems (second), put the BTA on a bommie surrounded by sand. This will keep the anemone from being as likely to wander off the bommie and prevent you from having to move the Scoly again. Make sure you give the BTA an overhang on the bommie near a column of current to keep it happy.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

In well-lighted reeftanks, there is enough reflected light energy to well-sustain low light creatures like the Scolymias/Cynarina spp. and related Mussidae genera. I keep my growing large specimen in the shade, it is about two years old and living under these conditions for that time. These are the circumstances the usually are found in nature (partial shade and reflected light based on positional change of light during the day).

Again, thank you for the help everyone.
I am pretty comfortable with where things are at. The bta did put himself under a bommie, right in the front middle. Great light and flow, and can recede underneath for the night. I'm thinking he should be happy there...but we will see.
As for the Scoly, he is down low (not in shadow) in what I would consider medium light and low/medium flow.
I will spend the rest of today attempting to interject the word 'bommie' into every conversation I have!
