A few dirty pics...

Here are some pics from my latest experiment - the lightless/dirty water tank.

Gorgonia; has a few scars from being in the wrong type of tank, starting to cover back over some of the bare spots tho.

Same gorgonia, polyp detail

Christmas Tree Coral

And of course the carnation coral, Dendronepthya in the foreground, Scleronepthya in the back.
These guys are the only ones that are proving a challenge; I've had them for a month with very little growth, but luckilly they are still expanding fully and have not degraded at all.

Completely no lighting for the corals. I do have a light, but it's only on when I want to look at stuff.

what are you using for filtration? are you skimming and heavily feeding or just relying on your water changes for detrital removal.

in other words, spill the beans man!!!

I was waiting for someone to ask.

These guys are in just a 10 gallon hex at the moment. I am currently curing/cooking rock for their permanent home, a 30g hex. I am going with a hex tank for the height, so I can have the carnations hanging upside down as they do in the ocean (supposedly they do better in aquaria if done so).

These guys get about 1.5tbsp of bottle phyto daily, with other small diameter food every few days. Filtration right now is 1/2 cup of carbon changed weekly and 100grams of purigen. I won't run a skimmer on this tank so I can keep as many nutrients floating around as possible. 5g weekly WC's are my main detritus removal tool.

I'm also planning on putting a tridacnid clam growout tank in (40 or 75gallon with 10-50 baby clams at any one time), then tying this tank to the sump of it with intermittant return pump timing (for one hour 3 times a day or so) so the clams benifit from phyto while also removing it before it breaks down.
