A better way to run carbon (or any other filter media).

For those of you that are just hanging filter bags in your sump....

I built this cannister filter from 2" PVC and fittings. I connect it to a RIO 800 and put it in my sump. This forces water through the filter media. Fo carbon I just put the carbon in a mesh bag and put the bag in the cannister.

BTW. I'm sure many others have thought this up. I got the idea from David Newman

Rick,
I've always used a hang-on Whisper powerfilter (one I use has adjustable flow) without the filter media.

Just an FYI.

A Rio may probably not the best choice for a saltwater environment. The supposedly-suspect quality of the windings aside, the impeller shaft metal isn't always appropriate for addressing concerns of corrosion.

I'm unaware that the manufacturer's have made efforts towards correcting these weaknesses in the past three years of numerous hobbyist complaints

The Rio just happens to be an extra ph I have. It's usually used to mix saltwater in a separate container. I just received a fresh shipment of Maxi-Jets last week so I'll switch to one of them. The Rio's clatter if there's too much backpressure anyway.

Good Idea for those of us with sumps. Once built it would be a quick and easy for those times when such filtration would come in handy. I dare say a Magdrive(pick size) would work as well as the workhorse 802 powerhead.
When is Aquarium Systems gonna get on the ball and produce really MaxiJets

Lifereef filters does something like that on there LF berlin series sumps. Check out www.lifereef.com they sell them pre made from acrylic with ball valve to control flow. It is a dual or quad cylinder design meant to be run from your main pump then driped into the sump. I have two on my LF-125 When i ised them It was a real time saver. I would fill the carbon and turn the ball valve on for a few days then when i did not want carbon I shut off the ball valve. Check them out maybe you can modify there design.
