Question

75 gallon stocking

this might sound dumb but i need a little guidance in stocking. for example i have read many places that a yellow tang needs AT LEAST 75 gallons to to occupy. so does this mean that if i put one in a 75 gallon aquarium he needs it all to himself or could i have a yellow tang and another fish that is said to need at least 50- 75 gallons? or would it be better to have one "big" fish and a couple of smaller fish? looking for help on this befor i go looking for just a 75 gallon so i know if i need to keep my eye out for something bigger.

No you can have other fish with the yellow tang in a 75 gallon. The problem with the yellow tang is that it is very territorial so when you add it to your tank it should be the last fish you add. If you plan on coral you would prob be better of with the tang and a few small fish. I have a 150 that I converted from fish with lr to reef and I have too many fish and have a hard time keeping my nitrates low.
Good luck
Patrick

the problem with yellow tangs is that they are broad area foragers. they cover huge amounts of area looking for algae to eat. they tend to travel in large groups. it is only in the small confines of our aquariums that they become aggressive to one another. they like to hang out together, but need to have their own personal space.

the 75g number is mainly for the 4' swimming length of the tank.

ok i kinda ment the yellow tang as an example but i guess what im really wondering is what is the significance of the minimum tank size (compared to how many fish) and can you have two fish that it is said have a 75 gallon minimum in a 75 gallon tank.

i dont know if this is what you are referring to but i have always been told 1" of fish to 5 gallons of water. (This is the adult length of the fish)
