72 Gallon Stocking - Input please

I'm a newbie to reef tanks. Just got my 72 gallon up and running, ready for fish soon. I have sump, protein skimmer, refugium, 80 lbs live rock, aragonite substrate (1/2" to 1" deep), halide lights, open tank (no lid). I currently have a 180 gallon Rift Lake Cichlid tank and am obsessive about water changes, weekly chemical tests, etc. I know how much work is involved to keep a healthy tank. I have been researching reef tanks for about a year and now am ready to stock. I have a list of fish I thought would be good together, please comment. I have waited too long for this tank to make any stupid choices stocking.

Think I Must Have these fish:

Yellow Tang
Hippo Tang
Mandarin Goby (will get 6-8 months after tank has been running when I've grown enough food for him in refugium)
Clown Fish (False Percula)
Six Line Wrasse
Coral Beauty Angelfish

Think I'd like to have these:

Orchid Dotty
Chalk Bass (group of 3-5)
Yellow Assesor
Lyretailed Fang Blenny

Would like but don't know if I can have (may jump out of tank):

Fairy or Flasher Wrasse
Purple Firefish

Comments please and suggestions. I really want to get this tank done right.

First welcome to TRT!

Out of the list of fish you must have i would say only one tang and the rest are ok in my opinion.

Out of the second list i would choose one fish from there maybe two at the most.

Third list i wouldn't get any of those fish because you will be at close to max capacity.

What type of skimmer do you have? Also do you plan on any corals for the tank if so what kind of lights do you have or will have if you are going to keep corals also.

I have 2 tangs in my 55. Yellow and sailfin that get along great. Added at seperate times without reaquascaping. Mandarin is a hard fish to keep IMO.

I'll give you my opinion, but I am only about 6 monthss into this hobby myself, but have done LOTS of reading and research. I have a 120g.

Remember, this is only my opinion:

- One Tang only. I think the Hippo is out of the question, only due to the fact that they will outgrow the tank. Smaller tangs to look at are: Kole Tang, Yellow tang, like you said, Tomini Tang, Purple tang all would be fine in that size tank, but only one.

- Mandarin Gobies are pretty hard to keep, unless you can get them to eat prepared foods. They will wipe out the pod population in no time and then slowly starve to death. I would seriously reconsider that, even in spite of the fact of having a refugium.

- I have a false perc and love him, great personality, will be getting him a mate very soon. I would recommend getting a pair.

- 6 line is 50/50 whether or not you will get a peaceful one or one that will bully other fish and/or nip corals and clams. Do some research here about them. I wanted the same thing till I spent some time researching them here. I have an extremely peaceful set-up and would/did choose corals and clams over the 6-line. Also, they are known to jump.

- Don't know anything about the Coral Beauty, sorry. Or any of the next 4 fish.

- I have 3 Flasher Wrasse and they are gorgeous fish, IMO, but they are high strung and known jumpers. Unless you have alot of rockwork and hiding places for them, they will eventually jump out.

- Same for the firefish. I have a red/orange one. Beautiful also, but they ping around like the Flashers when startled and eventually will jump out.

I have a canopy on my tank, with a screen mesh across the back to keep my jumpers in, but I also have alot of rockwork and hiding places for them, so they bolt for a hole first, before they try the top, but I have seen them go for the water's surface a few times.

Suggestions:

- Yellow Watchman Goby has a wonderful personality, as does the Lawnmower Blenny. Both stay around the sandbed and make great tankmates.

- Dragon / Sleeper Banded Goby is great for sandsifting and very fun to watch as he filters sand through this gills.

I would probably do a Yellow Tang, pair of False Percs, YWG, Lawnmower Blenny, Sleeper Banded Goby and possibly a Firefish, along with 1 or 2 more small fish.

Will this be a Fish Only, or a full reef set-up?

Glad to see you have done plenty of research and that you want to do it the right way. You are well on your way to becoming a successful reef keeper. Patience is essential.

Hope this helps some.

By the way, Welcome to TRT!

That's not good, IMO. You really only should have 1 in a 55 and even that is severely pushing it. They need alot of room to swim around, so having 2 in a 55 is asking for disease and stress. If not now, then when they start growing and getting bigger.

But, just my .02

Thanks for the great input. I kind of knew I shouldn't get a mandarin, just wishful thinking. I'm off to research your alternate suggestions. Yes this will be a full reef tank eventually. My lighting is halide and compact fluorescents. Great to have this site available. Does anyone know a good site for fish profiles? The Cichlid site I use has a built in profile section, couldn't find on at TRT. Would like to research fish more

choose 1 tang for a 72, yellow would be my choice becuase they stay smaller
the coral beauty may nip at corals you want to keep (just to let you know)

I've got 2 orchid's in my 94 corner, great fish
I have no Exp with chalk bass, how big do they get?
Yellow Assesor, very cool, I'd go with a group of 3-5 of those
bang blenny's are also very cool, choose 1, because you may only keep 1 per tank

keep the tank well covered, and you'll have no problem with either
