7100k Power Compact Bulb?

I am thinking of adding a small prop. Tank in my stand attached to the main system. Because I'm looking at 20" X 20" or in that area, Power Compacts seem to be the way to go. Many of the new hoods are coming with a packaged 7100K & a choice of 6500k or 10,000k. Rarely in the size am I looking at do they come with a 03 actinic. So how does this 7100k bulb rank? Is it strictly for a blue coloring of the water or does it actually offer some fluorescing ability like the 03 Actinic? Thanks

I'd think 7100k would still be pretty yellow. Aren't Super Actinics like 18000k? I thought 10000k was more like Actinic White. I know the 10000k Halide my friend has isn't very blue at all.

You are right in that the 7100k PC's don't offer the glowing effects of a true 03 actinic light. I'd go a step up so you could get that if it is important to you. The corals shouldn't really mind one way or another..find something that is pleasing to your eyes...plus the more watts, the better if you have the room and the money.

Kelvin rating for an Actinic bulb is pretty meaning less, mostly marketing reference

7100K

Well I just ordered the new fixture. It’s coming out with a 10,000K and a 7,100K in it. I began reading all those lighting posts again that I had book marked back when I started out in reef keeping. As I began sorting all the info I decided, buy the fixture you like that comes with the 7100k instead of the 03. Run it for a few months see how the corals respond and then upgrade to a 03 if you’re not getting the coloring you want. Should be interesting to see the out come I'm running 10,000k Halides with 03 VHO in the main tank. I am very happy with the growth rates and coloring with this combination. Guess I was a little gun shy as power compacts have got varied approval ratings from reefers. The whole reason I started this prop tank is because my snails have been playing practical jokes and tipping over the frags I make and place in the main tank. Thanks for the input from everyone.
