6 fish-less weeks & Hyposalinity
Ok, I am trying to get rid of ick. 6 weeks of a fallow display/hyposainity treatment started today, It will probably be a pretty boring process but I will update every so often.
Today I removed my 3 fish from the display, into the H/T they went. Two were easy to catch, but I had to pull all the rock to get the yellow tang.
I have had the H/T running for a few weeks, had the filter in my sump running for a little more than a week. I had a natural sea sponge in the sump that also went into the H/T. The water for the H/T came from the D/T. Did a 25% change this morning from the display to make it as close as possible.
I am gonna leave the fish alone for a few days, but I will need to treat them also. What is the best way? Hypo or chemical? How long do the fish need to be treated for? I want to be done with ick. I never, never wanna see another white spot in my tank again.
Wish me luck. - Mr. P

I prefer hypo...
Make sure your tank is 78 degrees or higher to ensure the ich's life cycle doesn't slow down... I prefer 8 weeks, but when I did it 5 years ago, I only did it for 5 weeks and 2 days if memory serves me correctly due to an issue in the quarantine tank.

Hypo worked best for me. Go at least 6 weeks.

6 weeks will be the minimum.
When should I start with the hypo? How long will that need to last?
Can somebody give me a step by step procedure on how it is done?

As soon as you move the fish start lowering the salinity. Hypo will need to last for 6 weeks and then start bringing it back up slowly.
I had a pretty well documented thread out here. I'll see if I can find it. BRB

FWIW Scruff had great results also as I recall

The link in my thread appears to be down or gone but the one Hop posted looks word for word the same. Follow it to the "T"!

Day 2
A few days into this so far.
My royal gramma who clearly had ick died within 24 hours of the move to the H/T. My clownfish and yellow tang are doing just fine. Both are eating and acting quite normal. A little more hiding than usual, but I assume that is to be expected. I have not seen one white spot on either of them since the move.
The hypo treatment is underway, I have one more water change to make and bring the SG to 1.009. I am keeping a close eye on the parameters.

Day 4
Yesterday I noticed both the clown and the tang were showing signs of ick.
Probably the stress from the move was enough to lower their defenses. I am assuming that this is a normal step in the hypo treatment.

quite typical, transfer to HT is always stressful. It is encouraging an bloom. just part of the process and nothing to be too concerned with. Not too say not to keep a close eye on them. All ich treatments inheirently have some risk to them. good luck

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Best of luck getting them through the hyposalinity treatment. I am hoping it works as well as expected for you.
