55 Build Finally Underway!
Hey Guys
Well, the house move is over and I finally got my 55 bowfront sited and filled with RO (man, that took a long time!) so far I have added all my hardwear (Red sea Prizm Skimmer, 2xCoralia4 powerheads, Reina Filstar4 external canister as a particle filter) but my lighting unit should be arriving on friday (yes, i've gone for MH + 2T5 tubes and 4 Blue LEDs) about half of my LR in the tank as I want it but have found a patch of Aiptasia so have put the build on hold while I genocide the colony! I am also wondering wether it is worth fitting a clear lid on the tank to reduce evaporation - anyone got any ideas on the value of this plan? Would it trap too much heat from the halides? Is there any possibility it would melt if it was clear perspex? Would it reduce the effectiveness of the lighting?
Your legendary input is needed TRT!

Don't cover the top w/ glass or plastic. Just set up some kind of auto top-off to keep the tanks water level steady.

Well, heres the first pics.
Tank when filled and mixed with H2Ocean (Black Bucket)
First LR load (Aiptasia now GONE!)
What the heck is this? This LR is crab city, about a dozen of the snippy critters from 1/8" up to nearly 2" across. This though, I have no idea! It moves around length-wise and appears to have a snail-like tail, but there are hairs all around the base of it which dont show on the pic. It kinda reminds me of something I saw on a fishing doc once about mussells. Any Ideas guys?

Well, Light unit arrived today...
2x150w 14k Halides + 2T5 Blue + 4xBlue LEDs
Cant help feeling it is sitting too far from the water surface though. Any thoughts?

I really like this light unit. It has separate switches for the T5s, LEDs and each MH so I now have the MHs on timers. Sooooooo much better than the unit I have on my 20g.

The unit should be fine sitting that high off the water. It should give you all of the benefits of the halide lighting, while giving some breathing room for the heat to vent away from the tank as well.
Congrats on a nice looking setup.

I agree with aquawolf. With a 150w fixture, you won't have much heat but it will dissipate b4 it can effect your tank.

Ok. Tense day today. Transferred all LR and Livestock from my 20g into the new tank. The only new addition in these pics is the anemony which I bought for my clowns as a moving in gift! They went straight in - I was well happy!
So just the last bits of LR to find and add now. Then I can start on corals.
