I have the same issue with that short brown algae in high flow areas (on my powerheads)... they just seem to really like the really high flow areas. You are going to go through several of these little small algae cycles as your tank matures.. just give it some time.

I never had that issue with a DSB. I'm not saying I never had issues with them just not this one. In fact it is the only issue I have had with this set up thus far. Well, that's not money related.
My scarlet (skunk) cleaner shrimp came out for the first time tonight. He didn't leave the comfort of the bottom of the rocks but he came out. I reckin' he will be moving about freely with in the next 3 to 4 days.
The candy coral appears to be eating a piece of silver side every other night. The one hermit I have might be stealing it after I leave. I ussually have to grab him and drop him to the bottom of the tank.
A little on the hermit... I don't really want him on the tank... He came in as a hitchhiker on the rock I got out of the 130 cube. I figured its just one and I can boot his arse easy if he bothers me. The deal about him stealing coral food bothers me but I know when that shrimp comes out he will be stealing more than the hermit. I have to admit I have grown a little fond of the hermit... He is comical to watch and he seems to have designated a specific location in the tank as his bed. He wedges him self into a small crevice every day betweet feedings. No mater where he goes during feedings he always goes back to that spot to sleep.

I bought a new RO/DI filter today coralife 50GPD TFC from a LFS for 150. Its new. I thought it was a good deal since it was instant gratification, it was cheaper than F&S and I have a store front for support.
I also got a magfloat 350 for 30 bucks I also thought that was a fair deal.
The shrimp is coming out quite often now and is even skimming the top of the water for me. He ussually hangs out tward the bottom of the tank just out side of a cave. I will bet he will be all over by sunday.
I really came close to getting purple LTA WITH a mated pair of tomato clowns in it for 80 bucks... It took a lot of self control to not get them. I really had to picture the LTA getting chewed up by a power head to convince myself not to get them. If I had the anenome tank set up it prolly would hav e been a done deal.

I did another 5 gallon water change and put about 7 oz of carbon into the tank. I'm going to do a 25 percent (20 gallon) water change on wednesday.
The skunk shrimp is pretty brave he climbed onto my hand today.

I did another 5 gallon water. change today... I'm not really trying to do all these water changes but this skimmer is a monterous beast.
I also added 2-5 inch radiashack fans to the light fixture about 2 days ago (or a week I can't remember) and I have noticed a marked difference in the chiller turn on time. Its actually cooled my entire house off significantly due to the chiller not running near as often and I'm betting our AC is not on as much either. I am definently going to employ cooling fans on the big set up when it is running. I think I'll vent it into the attic. Has anyone ever done this and has there been any bad effect from it like moisture damage?
Since I wiped the glass off friday there has been ZERO algae growth on the cleared off spots. No film, no anything. Absolutly none. Did I mention that there hasn't been any algae growth where I wiped the glass friday. I know its only been 2 days but with my DSB tanks glass wiping was an everyday event.if I wanted it to stay clear. I also noticed quite a bit of calcarous algae growth on the glass.

The fans I added are causing a lot of evaporation. Salinity got ip to 37ppt before I figured out how much. I got it back in place though.

I'm so glad I went back to coralife. I have only changed about 10 gallons (out of 80) and I can see a huge differance already in a couple days. Coraline is growing again, polyp extention is way up again and coloration has improved.

I haven't seen it locally...
I have a rock in the tank that I got with a couple Zoas on it that grew some of that brown algae on it that had been growing on my glass and it has almost disapeared after just one 10 gallon water change with the coralife. Coincidence? Hard to believe. I changed 5 more gallons today... I'm going to change 10 more tomorrow.

Sounds good Jason. I'm glad to see that some people are making the switch to it as it really is a good salt

Jason,
If you vent to the attic be sure to vent the air to the outside through a soffet or other outlet to the outside. Moisture buildup in the attic is bad due to the increase possibility of mold buildup and in colder areas ice buildup in the winter.
