Sounds like a good plan from the start. No sump though?

Drill it and put an overflow in it.
Run it sumpless.
Use an over-the-back weir type overflow.
See if they have a RR tank that size.

They dont make a RR that size.
I dont like/trust the over the back overflows.
I thought about the drilling but I dont know how to or have the tools and that will just add to the cost of the system. Is there a huge need for a sump on this size tank?

JMO...because I know you love my opinions

$500 for a skimmer is WICKED excessive (my opinion) for a 30 gal tank (if you had a sump you could buy a monster for that money and use it when you do upgrade) or couldn't you get away with something less...like this...and not give up much quality.

It is always good to add water volume to the system, it is more forgiving that way.

Sounds nice!I'd add a top-off and a ph monitor , a timer and last but not least a RO/DI unit.

The light comes with timers, I have a ph monitor and the Litremeter would be top off.

I dont know who would drill the tank for a overflow and how to make an overflow.

I never heard of that skimmer or heard much good or bad about them. The Deltec is supposed to be the cream of the crop.

The increased water volume is the main reason. That and to hide equipment out of site. A lot easier to stabilize 50 gallons of water than 30.

I have never used a weir box. I don't like them either. I have one that came with a 125G tank I bought and I will scrap it for parts.

As for drilling, don't if you aren't sure and don't have the tools to do it.

You can try local glass shops but I wouldn't let them. They won't guarantee it and 90% of the time they will break it because they get in a hurry and aren't worried about the tank because they will tell you it might break.

Maybe you could go for an in sump skimmer (save some dough for the next part - - - - - - - - - - >), and have a 30 gal (or other size) acrylic cube tank built for you that will come drilled and everything?!?! Outside the BOX! What do you think?
