Hey Awes, good to see you! What do you do differently with your tanks? I had this illusion that German tanks were mostly bb systems - doh!

...and they are quite successful and long-lived, but the husbandry is different from the popular approaches here.

I'm curious, how are their husbandry approaches in general, different from ours here in the U.S.? There certainly are some beautiful tanks there. I'd also be curious if the Japanese or Australians are using different techniques.

Small things ive noticed, like temperature. We generally keep our tanks slightly cooler than you guys.

Skimmers are really only used on larger tanks, but that may be due to the fact that we are really close to good, clean, cheap salt water, so we do more water changes in general, eliminting the need for skimmers i guess. Of course they are used on very large tanks, as no one wants to have to change that much water!
We also seem to use alot less 'hardware' in general than i have noted from pics/setups of tanks posted here...

We dont tend to use as much lighting as you guys, i think mainly because lighting is so expensive here, so we look for alternatives... PCs are huge here...

We tend to keep more fish (higher bioloads), as you have also noted with the german tanks shown here.

We think we dont use quiet as much liverock in our tanks as well. Does anyone know the coversion for pounds to kilograms??

For tanks with sumps, bioballs are almost always what you will find contained in the sump, as a trickle filter. In fact i cant recall the last time i saw liverock in a sump here...
Whats a refuge? :P we dont really use em...

Oh, TG2, BB tanks were a german idea werent they?
At least thats where i thought it originated from...

Maybe they decided it didnt work so well after all. It is sort of limiting i guess, in the sense that you cant keep sand bed critters, ie cucumbers, etc. And where are your wrasse' going to sleep?

Awestralian:

Very interesting, thanks for your comments.

How about deep sand beds? Do you have any comments about their use in Australian systems?

The great thing about using latin names comes into play when you're looking at a site such as this. At least you can read the important stuff sometimes.
