2 x 400w
would 2 x 400 halides be too much light for a 75g mixed reef tank?

Might be a bit strong for anything that isn't SPS. Might cause some heat issues aswell.

that much light would be fine as long as you have a DSB. if you are going with a BB tank then it would be way to much light.

I would recommend 2 x 250w and then do a higher kelvin like 15k or 20k

The 2*175 might be fine, especially if you use the Iwsaki 15K bulb, it's the highest output bulb for 175's right now,... but I usually always reccomend 250W for bulb selection and output reasons.
2*400W would be way too much IMHO, unless you went with Radiam 20K bulbs or something.

250's are more suited for that size tank they would work great for you.

Either type bulb will work for great, I have more luck finding the Mogule type local ,the stores dont stock the HQI's here for some reason.

250 watt bulbs would be the safest bet - not too strong, not too dim, just right.

Best bang for your buck is:
Icecap 250w ballasts
Sunlight supply Reef optixII reflectors (retros, if thats what your looking for)
Hamilton 250w 14K SE bulbs
I started with XM10K but didnot like the look and my softies did not like it either so I swapped to 14K Hammies and LOVE THEM!!!
I spent about a month looking and researching 2 months ago and got the complete 2X250W setup for $400.00 And the nice thing about the NEW Icecap ballasts is that they are enclosed and pre-wired. all you have to do is put on male/female connector on the ballast a socket wires. Peice of cake!!
