175G Tank Build PICS .. Pump choices! Yikes!
Help! Better or worse, I built it all... Work in progress!
Looking for concensus on pump usage 175g (48Lx28Wx29H) Reef Tank setup. I am thinking my choice of two external pumps may be energy hogs
Current Plumbing;
Tank in Living Room with two bottom CLS pods built (1.5" Out, 1" in with four 3/4 inch outputs per pod.
Bought iwaki 70RLT (2.8 amps) and Seq 4300 (2.9 amps) all external.
May not have been the best choice, was thinking QUIET .
I have sense relocated both pumps thru the wall on left of sump room (Garage) to further eliminate noise.
Once I get my cabinetry built around the stand I may have to reconsider cls pump location to bottom of stand ?
I'm also thinking Tunze streams and not use one of the externals ?
Looking for suggestions on the powering of the pods ? Single pump per pod ?
What about T4's under the stand, one per pod ? My living room couch is two feet from the tank, really don't want to hear a bunch of pump buzzing ?
Appreciate your thoughts and WATTAGE calculation on suggestions ..

the Velocity pumps are by far the quiest pumps i have ever used. if a stand is well sound insulated an Ampmaster may be fine.
i prefer the T3 velocities over the T4's. the T4's have barbed fitting, a pain to connect anything to. the T3's can also handle a good amount of head pressure, so the plumbing that you do to get to the tank will not hamper the flow much at all.

very true about the velocity pumps
the also tend to get a calcium buildup on the impeller housing over time
that said, I love my T4 for a return pump
go with a T3, and as a choice for increased flow, you can install educators on the nozzels

i believe it will depend on how much water your skimmer is processing. you want to match your return pump to that.

in my case i decided to go with the Mak equivalent of an Iwaki 70 for my return. noise was not a concern for me since the pump is in the basement. i was not getting the turnover i wanted in the tank with the T3. this is on a 125g with 45' worth of horizontal plumbing and 8' of vertical. it had to push a lot of head.
what is your overflow rated for? this will truely determine the max you can push through the sump.
